2021 Awards of Excellence Criteria & Conditions

Nominations will be accepted from members of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association.

The project must have substantial completion between April 30, 2018 and April 30, 2021 inclusive.  Once a company nominates a project, they are not eligible to re-submit the same project. There is no limit on how many projects one company can submit. Project nominations must be submitted by April 12, 2021. Companies must be prepared with a completed project submission package following the criteria and conditions, stated below, for their meeting with the judges.

General Contractors are permitted to submit nominations provided they are members of the VRCA and have at least one superintendent or full-time construction manager on their payroll on the job site throughout the life of the project.  For the categories of Electrical, Mechanical and Trade Contractor, members of the Electrical Contractors Association, Mechanical Contractors Association and COCA, who are contracted to a VRCA member company, are also eligible.

Please follow the seven criteria listed below when completing your project submission package for the judges. This information will be integral in evaluating the merits of your project.

Sufficient information should be provided to the judges to evaluate the budget performance of the project, including if profit objectives were met. Please also include the bidding method that was used to secure the contract.

Information must be provided to show the project’s schedule data and the actual performance relative to the agreed schedule.

Provide details on any special tools such as BIM or other that were used during the bidding process. Provide information on any specific innovations or improvements through value engineering that provided a financial benefit to the owner or improvements to the schedule.

Outline any unexpected hurdles that you over came, and how they were resolved.

Please include your project’s safety practices and records, including lost / time accidents (if applicable) on this project.

Communications and co-operations between the stakeholders on this project.

Procurement, delivery and storage of materials for this project.

If the project entry contains any feature which is or could be protected by patent rights, the submission must be accompanied by written evidence to show that the necessary steps have been taken to secure the requisite legal protection since neither the sponsor of the award nor the Vancouver Regional Construction Association can assume any responsibility for “prior disclosure” in advance of a patent application.

As a General Contractor, it is highly recommended that you nominate your Electrical, Mechanical and Trade Contractors or Manufacturer and Supplier. The Judges will award additional points to General Contractors who nominate and invite their relevant trades to the presentation. If your nominees are not present, they will not be considered for the award. It is the GC’s responsibility to notify your nominees of the presentation date. Trade contractors and Manufacturer & Suppliers can request a private meeting with the judges.

A panel of judges appointed by the Board of Directors of VRCA will review all project submissions. VRCA will contact all companies after May 3, 2021 to schedule a virtual presentation with the judges. These presentations will take place between May 17 – June 25, 2021, so please ensure your project team is available. The judges reserve the right to reassign entries to the category they deem fit. The judges use a point-based system to evaluate members’ nominations. Decisions of the judges are final.

Complete the provided PowerPoint project submission template that follows the seven criteria listed above. Your submission should be complete and ready to be presented to the judges between May 17 – June 25, 2021. If you do not wish to use the provided template, the minimum requirement for all presentations, including those nominated by a General Contractor is a 1-page fact sheet that addresses the seven criteria listed above. You will be required to provide digital copies of your submission for the judges and VRCA.

When you are invited to present your project to the judges, please be prepared to provide more detailed information. This can include photographs, drawings, references, testimonial letters by trades, owners, or stakeholders, and other awards presented for this project. If relevant, provide information on sustainable construction, LEED, Excellence in Building or similar systems.

You will be asked to provide VRCA with 3-5 photos of the nominated project. All photographs submitted become the property of VRCA. These will be used to promote the Awards of Excellence, VRCA and the construction industry. Photographs should be in high resolution eps and jpeg formats.
